FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Diann Teas (713) 664-4400 Ext. 222 or JOHN TEAS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF SERVICE AT TEAS NURSERY Bellaire, (April 30, 2007) – Those who appreciate John Teas’ work for 50 years at Teas Nursery enjoyed Teas Nursery’s special event on Saturday, April 28. On that day, at 11 a.m., Teas held a celebration to show our appreciation for John Teas. The celebration took place at Teas Nursery at 4400 Bellaire Boulevard in Bellaire. Councilwoman Peggy Faulk of the Bellaire City Council was the honored guest at the party. She announced "John Teas Day" in Bellaire. The winners of Teas Bud ‘n’ Bloom Photo Contest for 2007 were also presented. Prizes of $400 in Teas gift certificates were awarded to amateur nature photographers in the area. The winning photos are exhibited in the garden center at Teas. John Teas has led a long life in the nursery business. He was born at the nursery and came to work here full time in 1957. He has been active in professional organizations, plant societies, local colleges, and the Christian Science Church here in Bellaire, Texas. He is past president of Garden Centers of America. His family helped establish the community and John exemplifies the tradition inspired by his famous grandfather “Papa” Teas. Edward Teas Sr. brought his family nursery business from Missouri in 1910 to the Texas coast where he helped originate the landscape and nursery business in Houston. Famous for roses, Teas under John’s supervision continues to provide hundreds of varieties of new and old roses. John can often be found pruning the roses at the nursery he loves. |

Bellaire, Texas, Sat. May 3, 1997: Teas Nursery celebrated John Teas 40th Year of service with a special ceremony in Teas greenhouse in conjunction with month-long festivities for Teas Spring Festival.
John Teas was given the key to the City of Bellaire by Bellaire Mayor, Harold Penn. Mayor Penn said that John Teas was an ambassador for Bellaire when he says in his television commercials, "Hi. I'm John Teas of Teas Nursery in Bellaire."
Ken Bentsen, Congressman from District 22, also presented John Teas with a United States flag that had flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
John was also presented with an autographed photo of President Bush and Barbara Bush with best wishes. A large layer cake donated by Moeller's Bakery was served. A giant anniversary card was signed with two hundred signatures of customers, employees, family and friends of John Teas.
A large photo board of pictures of John as a baby and at various ages was on display. John Teas was born at Teas Nursery in the historic 1916 house (now landscaping offices).
John and his wife Pat Teas were joined by Tom and Diann Teas, Dan and Elaine Teas, and Milam Teas for the ceremony. Many Teas employees were present as well as speakers from the Festival including John Foster, author of a new tree book, Barry Gregory of Hines Wholesale Nursery, and Bridgett Mongeon, sculptor.
Jim Hughes of Texaco, Chairman of the Greater Southwest Houston Chamber of Commerce and many prominent members of the community were present (e.g. Phil and Jane Free, Barbara Brooks, Richard Cole, Floyd LeBlanc, Bob Earthman, Dr. Elouise Hughes, Marsha Emmons, Kitty and Robert Horton, and Fred Hicks)
Other events during the day included book signings of Golfer's Guide to Gardening by Randy Lemmon of 740 KTRH, All About Trees in and Around Houston by John Foster of Foster's Tree Service, Timely Tips for Houston Gardeners by Alice Hodges, former Chronicle garden writer, now 101 years old! Sculpture Demonstration by Bridgette Mongeon and daughter Christina Diliberto of Tink's Charm, African Violet Study Club Plant Sale, and Hines Nursery Plant Experts.
