Tillandsia Collections

Tillandsia Air Plants

Tillandsias, called by some the world's most unusual airplants, are a delightful addition to any greenhouse. They are easy to care for, exotic to look at, and interesting to study. Tillandsias are air plants, even more so than other bromeliads and much like vandaceous orchids. They prefer light airy conditions and daily misting in areas of low humidity. They must be brought into protection from any freeze, but a light frost will not usually damage them. The greener and softer varieties like a little more water and shade. Any can be grown in your sunniest indoor area. Enjoy your tillandsia plant for years of blooming and pupping with good light, fresh air, and adequate but not overabundant watering, particularly in cooler weather.

Tillandsia aeranthos
The name means air flower, which could well be applied to any tillandsia. The bright ruby red bracts of aeranthos emit contrasting single flowers of deep indigo blue, almost black. Individual plants develop along stems, to 4 or 5 inches in height and diameter. The succulent leaf blades are noticeably thinner and curled when dry. (Can be used as an indicator plant for your collection.) Grows slowly to a large clump. Stock #200699 $4.00 (.25 lb.)
Named for botanist Alberto Castellanos, this tillandsia has half inch cherry red blooms, large in relation to the plants small size. These very bright unusual blooms last about a week. It grows 2 to 3 inches in height and diameter, the leaves fanning out in a two dimensional plane. The plant is vigorous and prolific, making a large clump in 2 or 3 years. Shade tolerant.

The flaring rose-pink flower petals recurve. In contrast with the olive-green foliage, the effect is quite striking.

Tillandsia bergeri
Named for cacti researcher, Alwin Berger, this tillandsia is the most prolific species. The blooms are violet and white colored, resembling tiny iris flowers. Given good conditions (bright light, adequate water and fertilizer) it forms clumps very rapidly. Stock #200700 $3.00 (.25 lb.)
