Types of Antiques

These roses are souvenirs and survivors of the past. Often old roses will perform where the soil is less than perfect and the gardener is less ambitious. They are less likely to perish for want of a little water or fertilizer. Most are also fungus and insect free. The old rose blooms are often fragrant and very double or sweetly simple like a wild rose. They may lack exhibition form, and some may not bloom quite as often as modern roses, but for romance and easy-care you can't beat them. We receive antique roses several times during the year. Our selections may vary from this list. Plants listed in quotation marks are "found" roses that have not been identified, but are assumed to be older varieties. Some modern roses are listed with the antiques because of their compatibility with this group.

Earth Kind™ Roses - Easy-care roses selected from rigorous trials in Texas. The super performers have been designated EarthKind™ Landscape Roses. Most are antiques

Teas carries the following EarthKind™ roses:

Belinda’s Dream, Caldwell Pink, Climbing Pinkie, Duchesse de Brabant, Else Poulsen, Katy Road Pink, Knock Out™, Marie Daly, Mutabilis, Perle d’Or, Sea Foam, "SPICE", The Fairy

Belinda's Dream

Antiques roses come in many different types. But most antiques are proven over time to be hardy and reliable plants for even the worst soils. With a minimum of fuss they will bloom and bloom for many years to come. Our antique roses are grown on their own roots, which makes them especially hardy for our area. The differences between the varieties are worth considering in choosing your "new" old rose:

Species

Wild roses grow in all parts of the world and can be successful in your landscape. Most only bloom in the spring, but they can be the easiest and fastest growing roses to grow. Example: Lady Banks Rose

Chinas

The best for Houston and other warm climates, these lovely roses come in beautiful colors and many are fragrant. They are virtually evergreen and can bloom all the time. That’s what gets them in trouble in colder climates where they fail to go dormant. Example: Old Blush

Bourbon

Grown for their beautiful rich fragrance and elegant flowers. Heavy bloom spring and fall. China/Damask heritage. Example: Louis Philippe

Noisette

First truly American roses, developed in South Carolina in the early 1800’s. Repeating fragrant climbers. Example: Blush Noisette

Tea Rose

Grown for their rich tea fragrance and frequent bloom. Warm climate rose like a larger China. Example: Mrs. B R Cant

Polyantha and Floribunda

Excellent landscape color from these multi-flowered compact shrubs. The polyanthas are the ancestors of the more modern floribundas. Example: Valentine

Hybrid Musk

Very adaptable landscape plants that can be neat shrubs or pillar type climbers. And they will bloom a little in shade. They make well-behaved climbers with repeating, fragrant bloom. Example: Buff Beauty
