Climbing roses fall roughly into two basic
types - those with broad upright growth known as pillars
and the vigorous spreading varieties called climbers.
Pillars naturally have a columnar shape and are valuable
for small areas and are especially suited for arbors
and trellises. The spreading climbers, on the other
hand, develop long arching canes. Flowers are produced
in profusion when these canes are trained horizontally
along a fence, but will flower only on the terminal
bud if forced to grow upright.
In general, climbing roses should be pruned
only enough to shape the plant and contain its growth,
since blossoms are produced on second-year wood. Some
varieties do not fit into the usual categories of hybrid
tea, floribunda, etc., and are thus classified as "Large-flowered
Climbers."
Additional climbers are included in the antique
rose section.
